About Me:

I found it difficult to choose a title because I have so many varied interests and travel through many different worlds. My professional title is Professor. I work as a professor of education in a Foreign Language Education/ESOL program, teaching prospective teachers how to teach children who don't speak English. My passion in education is the promotion of cultural and language learning and acceptance, particularly as it pertains to immigrant, migrant and refugee children and families, helping them to learn English without sacrificing their native languages, and build a life in the U.S.

I like to write, both for professional and personal purposes. My professional writing is of research focused on teacher identity and language development. My personal writing includes essays, short stories, and a novel in progress with a friend.

I have two children, ages 22 and 16, who I describe as the highlight of my life garden–in awe of the brilliance of their flowers and wary of the thorns. So far the elegance of the flowers is constant and the thorns intermittent! Parenting is not for the faint of heart!

My hobby and passion is ice hockey. I am an avid fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning, but my favorite thing is to play. I have been playing for about 10 years in a co-ed league. In truth, the league is almost all men. My current team is the Makos and we're just in our 8th season. I have met many wonderful people through hockey who have enhanced my life in extraordinary ways and who have become like family to me.

Another part of my life is travel, particularly to Costa Rica. I went a few summers ago on a faculty development program and fell in love with the Monteverde area. I made some good friends there and have been back several times since then. I love speaking Spanish and feeling part of the culture. I have learned a lot about myself from my time in Monteverde and have connected with the earth and my own spirituality in a more profound way as a result of my time there.

Other travels include going to major U.S. and Canadian cities for conferences and leisure. I went to hockey camp in Lake Placid, NY, four times; attended a friend's wedding in Hungary; traveled through Tuscany with my man; visted Aguascalientes, Mexico for a conference; and have traversed much of upstate NY, also with my man as he lives up there. I am keeping my travels closer to home for much of the summer as I nest into the condo I bought in the fall.

So I travel the multiple worlds of academia, hockey locker rooms, the mountains of Costa Rica, and the unfamiliar terrain of my own life.  I'm an eternal optimist who always seeks the light for myself and for those around me.

You can get to know more about me through my blog and photos. Enjoy!
